How to create create multiple profiles using Windows Shortcuts

There is a chance that you may find yourself wanting to have multiple user profiles for for some application. While this document looks specifically at UT2004, the principles will remain the same for most applications, and you need only learn how to specify the profile to the application.

Now, there are numerous reasons why you may want to have multiple profiles for an appliction. For UT2004, they may include:
  • You share the same computer with family, friends or co-workers to play UT2004.
  • You may have different user settings for different game types
  • You may play with different user names on different servers.
Since many readers will be playing UT2004 using some form of Windows, this process will currently look at how to do this on those platforms, and even I find it a extremely simple process. For someone who hates Windows, and have avoided learning as much as possible about it, that is saying quite a bit! The steps for creating are as follows:
  1. Create a new shortcut on your desktop. You can do this in one of two ways. You may copy a shortcut which already exists on your desktop and paste a new copy there, or you may go through the Start menu and create a shortcut that way. While a little more complex, if you have already done this once, it will actually be easier in the long run to copy an existing shortcut, as you probably will not need to add/change as much text.
  2. Edit the properties of the shortcut. To do this, right click on the new shortcut, and select the properties item from the popup menu. Once you have done this, you will want make sure that the target reads something like the following: \System\UT2004.exe USERINI=User_myuser.ini The result of adding the ``USERINI=User_myuser.ini'' to the command is that UT2004 will read the user configuration from User_myuser.ini in your UT2004\System directory, creating it from the file DefUser?.ini if necessary. Without this, UT2004 will instead use the name of User.ini for its user configuration file.
  3. Rename your shortcut Needless to say, whether you have three or three dozen shortcuts on your desktop for playing UT2004, you don't want to have to fight to figure out which one is which. So, before you save your changes to the shortcut properties, there is something we will want to do. Click on the ``General'' tab at the top of the window. You will now see an entry box at the top of the screen with the name of the shortcut. Change this from ``Copy of XXX'' to a more meaningful name, such as ``UT2004 myuser''. Now, click the ``OK'' button at the bottom of the window, and your changes will be saved.
  4. Copy your template User.ini into place. This is an optional step if you are creating a configuration from the beginning. But if you are wanting to have the same customized key binding, player name, skin, UT2004 Stats ID, etc., then you will want to copy the user configuration file upon which you will be making your changes to the name you used in the target. To do this, you will go to your UT2004 system directory, and copy your old config file to the new name.
  5. Fire off UT2004, and make your changes. The last thing you need to do is to fire off UT2004 and make your desired settings changes. Click on your new shortcut, and away you go. You should know how to do the settings changes by now. The only thing to be aware of is that when you specify the user configuration file, instead of going to the main menu, you will instead see a message stating ``Connection failed'' every time you run the program. This is due to a long standing bug which has existed since UT:GOTY and has never been fixed. A nuisance, but a minor one, as at this point, you are also presented with buttons which you can click to get to the main menu, the server browser, or exit UT2004.
Have fun!
