Cycling Stuff

Document Actions
This directory is the beginnings of a nice resource for the cycling enthusiast.
I plan on putting my logs from my various rides and maps generated from them in this area, as well links to sites which talk about various trails, cycling events, and resources for things such as bikes. With the logs/maps, I will also be putting up links to photos/videos of those rides. I also plan on sharing information about GPS receivers, and using them with Linux. It will be under some fairly constant development for the forseeable future, so please check back regularly.

Local Resources

  • Ride Logs/Maps

This section needs some work. It currently uses a PHP script to produce some tables with links to files in a directory, and does so in a way which looses the overall look/feel of this site. I need to re-do this so that only the actual map displays are in windows which do not have the look/feel continuity, perhaps driving it from a database which would enable me to do things like comments, links to photos, etc.

How-To Links

  • How to use SPD Pedals

If you have never used SPD pedals, where there is a little plate on the bottom of your shoe, and it clicks into a "clip" on the pedal, you can be in for a bit of a surprise, and a few falls until you are used to them. And take it from me, even when you are used to them, you may still take a fall, such as when you unexpectedly clip in when starting out on soft ground. This is one article on how to use these pedals.

  • How To Guide for Cyclist

There are a few good tips here, such as how to deal with ``Hot Foot'', dealing with dogs, choosing cycling shorts, and other tips.

Trail Links

  • Columbus Trails and Greenways

A great site for the cycling enthusiast in Columbus, Ohio area. There are links to other sites, as well as updates on trail detours resulting from repairs and improvements to the trail system. The source of information I used for creating some of my maps for the Scioto Trail, and soon to be others. (Thanks Nick!)

  • OhioBikeways.net

Another good site, which covers the entire state of Ohio. I think this is managed by the same guy who does the CTG site.

  • Online Greenmap

This is a neat, interactive map of the Columbus area from the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, like Google Maps, which shows the bike trails in the area.

  • MtbREVIEW.com

A site I found and have yet to really look though. Seems to be more for mountain biking (e.g. off-road) rather than for road biking (e.g. bikes which are for paved trails).

Group Links

Event Links

  • TOSRV

Traditionally held Mother's Day weekend, this is a wonderful 2-day, 200-mile ride from Columbus down to Portsmouth on the Ohio River and back. If you ever have a chance and love long rides, you need to ride this event. I would do so this year, but I have yet to ride a single century (100-mile trip), and being most of 20 years off from riding/racing...

Vendor Links

Here are some links to various vendors/retailers. I am not big on brand names, since I often feel it is best to get good quality/service than to have a name without that. So having links here is not necessarily an endorsement of the vendor/brand, but rather a place to help folks find information about the product/service.
  • roll:

Looking to buy a bike or accessories for your current bike? I highly recommend this place, which is on the north side of Columbus near Polaris. They use a laser based measurment system to gather body measurements, and along with answers to questions like how you like to ride (upright, down low in a racing position, or in between), they can setup a bicycle to where it only takes a few tweeks to get it fitting quite comfortably. Sure, it takes awhile, but when they are done, they could setup another bike just like it if you decided on a new model. Even after I move down to southeastern Ohio, I plan on driving up and making my purchases here. If you go there, tell Jake and the rest of them that Doug recommended them to you! (And no... no kickbacks to me.)

  • Giant Bicycles

My bike is a Giant OCR2, and I am very pleased with it. I just wish my model/year had come in a pretty blue... but hey, the red/black bike does not look too bad either.

  • Garmin

If you know anything about GPS units, you have no doubt heard of Garmin. I highly recommend their Garmin Edge® 305, which allows me to record things like where I ride, my speed, altitude, heart rate and cadence. It works great even in the car, which allows me to verify the spedometer, produce maps for comparing routes to common destinations, etc.

  • Pearl Izumi Like I said, I am not into brands, but into quality and service. I purchased my bike shoes (the Vagabond M4 is closest to what I have) last fall with the bike, and this Spring got my shorts and jersey (blue of course!) at roll:, and have found them quite worth the purchase. I just wish I could find a slightly cooler jersey and get everything in a nice, bright blue! :)

These links are not only useful to the cyclist, but to others as well.
