OpenLDAP is an open source implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, which is one of the Internet standards which forms the basis of things such as Windows Active Directory service (the other big ones being Kerberos V5 and DNS).These protocols also form the basis for Red Hat's Identity Manager (IdM), as well as the open source implementation of IdM, FreeIPA.

There is also a competitor fork of the original University of Michigan slapd project, 389ds, which touts itself as "The enterprise-class Open Source LDAP server for Linux.", which is what was used by IdM. Because both rely on Internet standards for file formats, the IP protocols and more, and generally only minor cleanup is required to move the LDIF files from one to the other.

openldap

A headache regarding openldap configuration.

So, I ran into an interesting problem tonight, and I figured I would share my solution. I have been doing some additional hardening of my site, such as re-encrypting certain passwords to use stronger encryption standards. And rather than using the old NIS+/YP protocols which came out of the SunOS world and which quickly made its way into the BSD world and eventually into other UN*X OSes including Linux, I have been using LDAP, and specifically OpenLDAP with SSSD.
